The root that defines us

"By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" (Jn. 13:35).

When I said there is a root that defines us I was referring to things that make Christianity different from other stuff. Quite a lot of them but some stand out more than others. For example, just look at the statement above closely and you will discover that other leaders had disciples, but Jesus wanted His own followers to be different from others. He said love is the key. But love for who? For each other? Yes and No. We would not be able to love each other until we love God. We must love differently from the world.

"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets" (Matt. 22:37-40). If only we understand what love is.

Love is not a feeling, so it's not an emotional thing. Emotions are controlled by body chemicals which change all the time and that's why you love today and hate tomorrow. Love is a commandment and that makes it a "will" dependent thing. Will is a product of decision. You cannot will without deciding first. Love is the hanger of Christian faith and it's a product of knowledge.
